
George Richmond
George A Richmond, 90, of Hawkeye, IA, died Friday September 5, 2014 at Maple Crest Nursing Home, Fayette, IA.
George was born December 26, 1923 near Waucoma, IA, and graduated from Sumner High School in 1941.
Upon turning 18, he enlisted in the US Navy in January of 1942. He served during WWII on an LST in the African and European theaters and one year in the Philippine Islands.
Following his discharge from the Navy he worked as an auto mechanic and parts manager in Hawkeye and West Union, IA.
While living in Hawkeye he met Mary Huber. They were married in June of 1949. They are parents of David (LuEllen), Coon Rapids, MN; Jeanne (Dennis Stannard), Fayette, IA; Michael John (deceased); Anne (Glen Custard), Des Moines, IA; and Steven (Julie), Des Moines, IA.
Later he was an engineer in the John Deere Experimental Lab at Waterloo, IA. He then went to work for Hawkeye Telephone Co. as a lineman and became manager.
From 1961 to 1964 he was manager of the Fayette County Mutual Telephone Co. in Fayette, IA. In 1966 Continental Telephone hired him to work in their Fayette district. In 1973 he was transferred to Chariton, IA, as Commercial Manager. His final position with ConTel was Regional Fleet Manager. He retired from ConTel in 1983 and moved with his wife to Hawkeye.
For many years George served as president of Fayette County Tourism, Hawkeye Economic Development (HED) Corp., and as Commander of American Legion Post 312, Hawkeye. He was a member of the Hawkeye Lions, Knights of Columbus, Hawkeye Bingo Committee and Hawkeye Cemetery Board.
He enjoyed family activities, especially fishing.
In addition to his infant son, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Anne Jeanette, Edith (Kadera), and Donna (Scholbrock); and his parents Ralph and Darlene (Day) Richmond.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; sister, Elaine; four children, six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 am on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union.
Burial followed in Hawkeye Cemetery.
Visitation was held from 4 pm until 7:30 pm on Monday, September 8, 2014 at Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in West Union with a rosary at 4 pm and scripture service at 7:30 pm.
