William Shafar, Sr.
William (Bill) Dean Shafar Sr., 75, of West Union passed away Sunday, Aug 7, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.
Funeral services were held at 11:30 am, Friday, August 12, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in West Union.
Inurnment followed at West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa.
Visitation was from 9:30 am until 11:30 am, Friday, August 12, 2016 at the United Methodist Church, West Union.
Bill, son of Robert and Elnora Shafar, was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on August 15, 1940.
He graduated from Callender High School. On January 10, 1966,
Bill was united in marriage to Joan Carol Olson. Their first home was in Buffalo Center. Bill and Joan were blessed with five children, four living, Tim, Justine, Bill Jr. and his favorite Cyndi. One other son Brian died at birth.
Bill and Joan called West Union Home in 1972. It was in 1975 that Bill started the fiberglass operation known as Shafar Fiberglass, that was located in the former school in Alpha. In 1978 Bill put up the first building east of West Union, where he continued the business until he retired in 2013.
He always had a great passion for gardening, and was known for growing the biggest vegetables around, with a specific passion for onions!
Bill is survived by his children, Tim (Deb) Shafar of Vinton; Justine (Jon) Holland of Ankeny; Bill (James) Moyle-Shafar Jr. of Cedar Rapids, Cyndi (Ron) Roulson-Bills of West Union; brother, Ken (Joan) Shafar of Tavares, Florida, grandchildren, Rebekah, Hannah, Joshua, Grant, Bruce, Drake, Jenny, Josie, Brian, Angie, Michele, Brandon, Brittany, Bryton, Brooklyn, great-grandchildren Hunter, Aiden, Derik, Kael, Julliette, sister-in-laws Darlene, Linea, Patty and Susan, brothers-in-law Bob, Roger, Lewis, Larry and many nieces and nephews, and special friend, Loyla Taylor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son Brian; and sister-in-laws, Beverly, Harriet, Karen, Kathleen, Elaine and brother-in-law Richard.
